Levaquin (levofloxacin) is a Fluoroquinolone Antimicrobial Drug used by adults as a lung, sinus, skin and urinary tract infection treatment. Recently the FDA issued a Black Box warning be put on Levaquin notifying patients of the increased risk of tendonitis or tendon ruptures that have been associated with taking the drug.
Levaquin Side Effects such as tendonitis or tendon ruptures can occur during or after completion of the use of Levaquin, and the risk of tendonitis or tendon rupture is increased in patients who are over the age of 60, who have had heart, kidney or lung transplants and patients who are using concomitant steroid therapy.
The FDA states that the most important thing to know when taking this medication is that it can cause Levaquin side effects that may be serious or even cause death. They have stated that tendon ruptures have happened up to several months after patients have stopped taking Levaquin.
Some signs or symptoms of a tendon rupture are:
• If you hear or feel a snap or pop in a tendon area
• Bruising right after an injury in a tendon area
• If you are unable to move the affected area or bear weight
